Today at 7 p.m. ET, from Hawaii to New York, hundreds of groups will take to their communities in the U.S. in peaceful protest of what they describe as police brutality.
It all began with the Twitter hashtag #NMOS14, which calls for a national moment of silence.
“It’s not just Ferguson. Police brutality is pervasive. It’s happening in so many cities,” New York-based social worker and community activist known online as Feminista Jones told the USA Today Network.

Give Me Strength, Lord
Lord, you are Holy above all others, and all of the strength that I need is in your hands.
I am not asking, Lord, that you take this trial away. Instead, I simply ask that Your will be done in my life. Whatever that means, that is what I want.
But I admit that it’s hard, Lord.
Sometimes I feel like I can’t go on. The pain and the fear are too much for me, and I know that I don’t have the strength on my own to get through this.
I know that I can come to you, Jesus, and that you will hear my prayer. I know that it is not your intent to bring me to this point just to leave me in the wilderness alone.
Please, Lord, give me the strength that I need to face today. don’t have to worry about tomorrow.
If you just give me the strength that I need today that is all I need.
Keep me from sinning during this trial. Instead, help me to keep my eyes on you. You are the Holy Lord, and all of my hope rests in you.
Thank you for hearing my prayer.
In Jesus’ name. Amen.

From Dr. E. Dewey Smith: Spiritual son of Bishop Jakes, one of the largest churches in Atlantas, The House of Hope Atlanta
Since the election of President Barack Obama, the notion of a “Post-Racial” American society has been discussed with regularity. Many people around the world have celebrated the United States’ “progress” the terms of race relations.
While Human & Civil Rights advocates have witnessed & celebrated flashes of hope, the shooting of Mike Brown, an unarmed 18 year old African American teenager in Ferguson, Missouri has once again reminded us that there’s still much work to be done.
The global outcry after this young man’s senseless death has been painful to watch. Peaceful protestors being confronted with a “military type of peace response” with tanks, machine guns, tear gas and tanks, are horrible reminders of the 1950s & 1960s. Insensitive & uncaring law enforcement strategies have further fueled an untenable situation.
Although division, hatred and racism are still extremely prevalent in our world, the responses of persons from all types of ethnicities have given reasons to be hopeful. The press and social media are replete with stories of varying communities joining their voices in a harmonious chorus that justice, liberty and freedom must be available to all. Let us join that wonderful aggregation with the resounding tones that victory will be ours.
