GUMEC Interview with Snoop Dogg
Source: Reach Media / Urban One

When you think of Snoop Dogg, maybe you picture West Coast hip-hop, football camps for the kids, or that unmistakable voice dropping classic hooks. With the release of his new gospel album, Snoop Dogg shares another side of himself that’s just as deep and genuine as his love for music. Gospel fans, Hip-Hop heads, and anybody with a mother they adore—you’re about to feel this one.

Snoop has a brand-new gospel album, Altar Call, and it’s not just music for music’s sake. Snoop poured his heart and his faith into every track, honoring the memory of his late mother, Evangelist Beverly Tate, who passed her love of God and community on to her famous son. The timing couldn’t have been more meaningful, as the album dropped on what would have been his mother’s birthday.

He shared with Erica, “When my mother transitioned, it felt like her spirit became my spirit. I have to continue to live as if she was still here, and do things in the spirit of her.” For Snoop, this project is a celebration and a call to fellowship, just like the gatherings his mother would have cherished.

Snoop’s foundation is the church. He reminisced about growing up in Long Beach, where his mom had him at church learning the Bible and being part of a community that truly became family. “They instilled church in us, and it was a brotherhood too…church makes you family.” It’s a sentiment so many of us can relate to—that place where your best memories, and sometimes your life lessons, are made. When asked what “altar call” means to him, Snoop’s answer was a sermon in itself. “Altar call to me means coming and surrendering…don’t feel shame, don’t feel like you’ve done too much to be forgiven. We have a forgiving God. The altar call is always open for you.”

MORE STORIES:

That’s a message for all of us. None of us are too far gone, too broken, or too lost for God’s grace. And Snoop is using his platform, as grand as it is, to remind us that redemption is real and love is always within reach.

With the Altar Call album, Snoop brings together not only those with roots in the church but also the so-called “lost,” the ones who need that light the most. Even partnering with the Death Row Mass Choir, Snoop isn’t afraid to mix worlds and blur lines; after all, as he said, “Light works best in the dark.”

He reminded us that God’s plan is bigger than appearances and public perception. “You can’t be a public success and a private failure.” It starts at home, and Snoop is grateful that his mother’s faith reached her own house, including her son.
