Neighbor heard ‘moaning and crying’ hours before Rodney King found dead
Early Sunday morning, just hours before Rodney King was found dead, a neighbor says she heard someone sobbing in his yard.
King, 47, was found at the bottom of his swimming pool at his Rialto, Calif. home. His fiancée, Cynthia Kelley had talked to him through a sliding glass door and a short time later heard a splash. She ran outside where she found King in the pool, reports the Los Angeles Times.
Rialto Police Capt. Randy DeAnda told the publication that Kelley was the only person home at the time and did not jump in the pool to help King because she is “not a great swimmer.”
According to the Times, neighbor Sandra Gardnea, 31, said at around 3:30 a.m. she heard some sobbing as though they were “really sad.”
She added, “There was a lot of moaning and crying… Another person was trying to console that person.”
Gardea told the Times that several hours later she heard a splash and the paramedics and police were on scene.
Paramedics attempted to revive King, but “There were no signs of life,” according to DeAnda. King was pronounced dead at Arrowhead Regional Medical Center at 6:11 a.m.
The Times reports King was a good swimmer showed no signs of head trauma. In addition, there were no outward signs of drug use or alcohol consumption.
King’s death is currently being investigated as a drowning.
